Is Love Beauty and Planet cruelty-free?

It is currently unclear whether Love Beauty and Planet is truly cruelty-free. Love Beauty and Planet is owned by Unilever, a corporation that continues to test on animals. However Love Beauty and Planet claims their products are not tested on animals and are 100% vegan but no further information was provided.

Not enough information was provided to determine whether Love Beauty and Planet test on animals or not.

Love Beauty and Planet Animal Testing Policy

There is virtually no information about Love Beauty and Planet’s animal testing policy on their website, except for this underwhelming description:

“We also make our products vegan and never test on animals.” (Source: Love Beauty and Planet)

I emailed the company to ask for specifics about their animal testing policy and received the following response:

Love Beauty and Planet inherits the same animal testing policy as their parent company, Unilever.

Unilever is known to be a corporation that continues to test on animals and the part in their animal testing statement that implies they test on animals is this sentence “Where some testing is required by law or currently unavoidable, we aim to minimize the number of animals used.”

In the screenshot above, you’ll also see that when I emailed Love Beauty and Planet, I received Unilever’s animal testing policy with a small snippet in the middle claiming that “Love, Beauty and Planet products are never tested on animals and the ingredients are 100% vegan.” When I pressed for more information about Love Beauty and Planet’s animal testing policy, I never received a response back.

I do not feel confident or comfortable claiming Love Beauty and Planet as being cruelty-free because although none of their products are tested on animals, they weren’t able to comment or clarify whether their ingredients are tested on animals.

It’s also implied that all of Love Beauty and Planet’s products do not contain any animal ingredients however brands can produce and market products that are vegan but not cruelty-free.

Ultimately, Love Beauty and Planet has not provided me with enough information about their ingredients and ingredient suppliers and therefore I am unable to determine whether I would consider them as a cruelty-free brand or not. I am publishing my correspondence with them so that you can make up your own mind about their cruelty-free status.

  1. I reached out to Love, Beauty and Planet on instagram and they responded saying they are cruelty-free and do not test on animals. However, they are owned by Unilever so I guess it is up to the person if they don’t buy products that may be cruelty free but are owned by companies that aren’t cruelty free.

    1. Hey Shelby,
Did they say anything about their ingredients and ingredient suppliers? Often times, companies will claim their products are not tested on animals, but their ingredients were tested on animals. Or they’ll claim *we* don’t test on animals, but their ingredient suppliers will test on animals.

So I’m willing to overlook Love Beauty and Planet’s affiliation with Unilever only if they’re able to clarify and speak directly about their ingredients and ingredient suppliers =)

      1. Hi Vicky,

My take is the same as yours. In fact, on the back of the LBAP package they have a list of ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ (e.g., ‘YES Vegan, NO Dyes’)…and yet they articulate their animal testing policy as ‘YES Not Tested on Animals.’ To me this is a roundabout way to avoid saying ‘NO Animal Testing’ which would be more absolute and inclusive of ingredient testing on animals.

Bummer, because the products feel and smell lovely!

      2. To be certain that a cosmetic product is PETA certified cruelty-free, please check PETA’s website where Love Beauty Planet is listed: http://features.peta.org/cruelty-free-company-search/cruelty_free_companies_company.aspx?Com_Id=7176

Our commitment applies to the whole brand, regardless of whether a PETA Cruelty Free logo is on the pack. The PETA Cruelty Free logo will begin to be seen on some of our packaging progressively to assure and inform our customers that Love Beauty and Planet does not, and will not, test on animals.

To earn the PETA certification, brands need to meet the PETA criteria. First and foremost, you need to show that none of your products are tested on animals and that your suppliers are not doing any animal testing on the materials they provide to you.

  2. I saw these today at Target and I have to say I was almost sold until I saw they are owned by Unilever!! Red flag!! And it says plant-based ingredients! I’m like wtf?! Good product but bad company! No way are they getting my money! Nope! Also beware…Unilever also owns Ben & Jerry’s ice cream…

First off, I wanted to thank you for writing this post. I am saddened to discontinue my use of this product, but know that it is for the greater good that I do. How unfortunate it is that so many companies continue to test on animals, contributing to needless suffering for corporate profit. As much as I had loved using this product, I take more pride in a clean conscious. Let me and other readers alike know of any changes in their policies, please. Thank you for the informative read.

  4. It really sickens me the way Love Beauty and Planet is being marketed (at least over here) as totally cruelty free.
It’s just deceitful + I hate to think how many well-meaning shoppers will be duped by their fake image. Veganism is a philosophy, not just a diet.
