List of 30+ Vegan Makeup Brushes

Vegan Makeup Brushes are made with synthetic fibers instead of animal hair, check out this list of 30+ vegan makeup brushes!

If there’s one time where the term “cruelty-free” doesn’t mean anything, it’s gotta be when you’re shopping for makeup brushes!

Companies that use natural ‘animal-hair’ bristles to make their brushes are now labeling them as “cruelty-free” claiming that the process in which they obtain the animal hair are done in a humane and cruelty-free manner where the animals aren’t harmed.

The truth is, cruelty-free and animal hair brushes should not be used in the same sentence unless it’s to say “animal hair makeup brushes are not cruelty-free.”

There are no regulations or laws that protect the welfare of fur animals that are used to make brushes. So even when a company claims “no animals are harmed”, there is no one checking up or verifying how these animals are being treated. “Cruelty-Free” makeup brushes that use animal hair is all just a marketing gimmick.

If you want truly cruelty-free makeup brushes that are in itself free of animal cruelty– opt for vegan makeup brushes instead! Vegan makeup brushes are made with synthetic fibers.

So instead of looking for makeup brushes that are “cruelty-free”, you’ll want to find ones that say they’re made with synthetic bristles. Or you can simply use this list of 100% Vegan makeup brushes!

    Your information is inaccurate!

Vegan = no animal products used but may NOT be cruelty free as may be tested on animals.
Cruelty free = not tested on animals at any stage of production or end product but may have real animal hair and therefore the farming and fur removal is far from cruelty free.
This misunderstanding is misleading well meaning consumers into buying ‘cruelty free’ that is NOT cruelty free.
The only way to be cruelty free is to purchase Cruelty free AND Vegan certified brushes like Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics (OCC) as an example…

I am well aware of the differences between cruelty-free and vegan. In fact, I have a post explaining the differences and it’s similar to how you are describing it http://ethicalelephant.com/crueltyfree-vs-vegan/

I’d like to take a moment to say that all of the 30+ brands I mention in this post are indeed cruelty-free and none of these brands test on animals at any stage of product development. If you have some information about any of 30+ brands I mention here that may not be cruelty-free, please let me know and I’ll look into it and I’ll update this post if need be. However, at the date of this post.. I made sure none of these brands test on animals or sell in markets that may require animal testing.

And as you may know, this article is about makeup brushes made without animal hair and therefore are vegan.

So all 30+ makeup brushes are BOTH cruelty-free and vegan.

They may not all be CERTIFIED vegan and cruelty-free and I never said they were but I assure you that all of these brands do not test on animals and the makeup brushes they sell are vegan.

    • Vicky Ly
      June 20, 2017

Yes! You’re right… Zoeva does have a number of synthetic and vegan makeup brushes however they also do offer some animal-hair brushes too! I hope one day they’ll drop their animal-hair brush line and just make synthetic brushes in the future! =)

Vicky I just love your blog and all of your information. I have been a makeup artist for 28 years, and over the last 5 I have completely stopped using anything that is not 100% cruelty free, with a cruelty free parent company.. you have inspired me and taught me so much. I just want to say thank you. I will be promoting your site on all forms of social media and all 4 of my business web-sites. thank you from the bottom of my heart.

The information here is not explaining with 100% clarity what cruelty free and vegan mean, see below x

    • Vicky Ly
      December 18, 2016

Yes! You’re absolutely right, The Body Shop’s makeup brushes are made from synthetic fibers and therefore are vegan! =) But it should be noted that The Body Shop is owned by L’Oreal, a parent company that has admitted to testing on animals till this day =(

So frustrating that some sites are creating posts with such reach that are not 100% clear on the different between cruelty free and Vegan. You seem to be well aware of he difference thankfully.

Vegan = no animal products used but may NOT be cruelty free as may be tested on animals.
Cruelty free = not tested on animals at any stage of production or end product but may have real animal hair and therefore the farming and fur removal is far from cruelty free.

My personal favorite Vegan and Cruelty Free Makeup Brushes are from FitGlow Beauty.
There are some companies that state they are Vegan and cruelty free brushes, that aren’t. I don’t remember the names but I’ll see if I can find out which ones they were.
    Definitely checkout FitGlow Beauty!

    Hi Vicky,

Thank you for sharing there are a lot to choose from..

    • Vicky Ly
      October 18, 2016

      Hiya Victoria!

Yes, you’re absolutely right! How exciting that BH Cosmetics came out with a whole range of vegan makeup brushes! I was going to add them to this list but they also sell a bunch of animal-hair makeup brushes so I didn’t want to confuse anyone.

I’m hoping one day they’ll stop production of their animal-hair brushes and ONLY carry vegan brushes! hehe =)

    August 26, 2016

Hello, thank you for this post. I am on the Ecotools website & I can’t find anywhere that they claim to be vegan brushes. They simply say “cruelty free synthetic brushes”, which is likely a synthetic material that contains an animal product? I was hoping to use your guide to take some of the work out of my search for true vegan brushes. Could you please let me know if you have looked into this? Are the brushes in your guide vegan or just not made of animal hair?

    • Vicky Ly
      August 26, 2016

Hiya! If you’re looking for animal-free makeup brushes.. you want to look for brushes that say they are made from synthetic fibers. This means that no real animal hair are used and therefore no animals are harmed or killed.

      synthetic brushes = vegan brushes

So all 30+ makeup brushes that I mention in this post, including Eco Tools, are indeed VEGAN!

Hope that clears things up for ya! =)

The synthetic brushes may also be tested on animals! So cruelty free AND vegan is what is important…

I don’t think their full range is vegan AND cruelty free, they also sell to China where it is automatically a requirement to test all products on animals before it is sold in that country. Authentic cruelty free companies dont sell to China for this reason. Also cruelty free does not mean they are synthetic and synthetic does not mean cruelty free….
