Vegan & Cruelty-Free Cleaning Products and Brands

In addition to cosmetics and personal care products being tested on animals, household cleaning products and their ingredients can also be tested on animals in 2023.

Some of the unnecessary and horrific animal experiments done to test the safety or efficacy of household cleaning products and their ingredients include having chemicals dripped into animals’ eyes, rubbed onto their skin, and forced down their throats.

As consumers, we can vote with our dollars by choosing to only buy cruelty-free cleaning products from brands that don’t test their ingredients or finished products on animals.

Here you will find a list of cruelty-free and vegan cleaning brands that don’t test on animals. In addition, I’ve also noted which cruelty-free brands are also 100% vegan and don’t use any animal-derived ingredients or by-products in any of their product lines.

Note: If you do not support cruelty-free brands owned by a parent company that tests on animals, then please avoid Ecover, Method, Mrs. Meyer’s, and Seventh Generation.

Cruelty-Free Cleaning Products

With lots of cruelty-free and vegan household cleaning brands to choose from, I wanted to highlight some of my favorites with a brief description of what’s to love about these cruelty-free brands!

Mrs. Meyer’s Clean DayLeaping Bunny Certified. Mrs. Meyer’s is cruelty-free, however, they are owned by SC Johnson, a parent corporation that does tests on animals. Mrs. Meyer’s garden-inspired scented, cruelty-free cleaning products are made with plant-derived ingredients and essential oils.

Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day offers a range of vegan cleaning products including household cleaners, dishwashing, laundry, and air fresheners. All of their products never contain ammonia, chlorine, parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, artificial colorants, phosphates or petroleum distillates.

MethodLeaping Bunny Certified. Method is cruelty-free, however, they are owned by SC Johnson, a parent corporation that does tests on animals. In addition to being cruelty-free and not testing on animals, all of Method’s products are also vegan and don’t contain any animal-derived ingredients or by-products.

Method’s collection of household cleaning products includes all-purpose, bathroom, floor, glass + surface cleaners, cleaning wipes, as well as dish cleansers and laundry products. Refillable pouches are also available.

EcoverLeaping Bunny Certified. Ecover is cruelty-free, however, they are owned by SC Johnson, a parent corporation that does tests on animals.

Ecover cleaning products are also vegan and contain naturally-derived ingredients. Ecover offers a cleaner solution for every room in the house including cleaners for the kitchen, bathroom, and laundry. Nature Clean – Nature Clean is a locally owned company based in Canada and all of their products are manufactured and packaged in Canada too! All of Nature Clean’s household cleaning products are hypoallergenic, biodegradable, and contain naturally-derived and vegan ingredients.

Nature Clean has a collection of vegan and cruelty-free dish soaps, multi-surface, glass and window cleaners, and laundry products.

Seventh GenerationLeaping Bunny Certified. Seventh Generation is cruelty-free, however, they are owned by Unilever, a parent corporation that does tests on animals. Seventh Generation produces effective cleaning products made with renewable plant-based ingredients and the packaging of their products are designed with recycled materials.

Seventh Generation has a great selection of cleaning products including disinfecting cleaners, household cleaners, laundry, and dishwashing.

Note: Seventh Generation does not use any animal-derived ingredients or by-products in their products, however, when asked if all of their products are vegan, they kindly informed me, “Seventh Generation products do not contain any animal ingredients or byproducts. However, our products are not vegan certified. […] Seventh Generation prioritizes the use of plant-derived ingredients over synthetic ingredients. These plant-derived ingredients are derived from feedstocks that are grown using standard agricultural practices including the use of animal-based fertilizers such as manure.”

I appreciate Seventh Generation’s honesty and transparency on the subject of using animal-based fertilizer to obtain their plant-based ingredients. Keep in mind, most fruits and vegetables sold at the grocery stores also use animal-based fertilizer. And by our standards, products that do not contain any animal-derived ingredients and by-products are considered vegan in our books. So, we will continue to consider Seventh Generation’s products as vegan in our consumer guides.

AstonishLeaping Bunny Certified and certified by the Vegan Society. Astonish is a British company with a range of cruelty-free household cleaning products that are not tested on animals or contain any animal ingredients. Astonish has cleaning products for general household, kitchen, bathroom, floor cleaners, dishwashing, laundry, and even for car. Nellie’sLeaping Bunny Certified. All Nellie’s products are biodegradable, and their entire line is free of harmful toxins, phosphates and synthetic fragrances. Nellie’s has cleaning solutions for laundry, home, kitchen, and bathroom.

I especially love Nellie’s laundry powders, they’re more concentrated than other detergents where all you need is one tablespoon for each load of laundry. In addition, Nellie’s laundry powders do not contain any fillers and rinse completely clear, leaving nothing behind. No perfumes, no optical brighteners, no solid synthetics.

    1. Hi Ben, almost all of Dr Bronner’s products are vegan with the exception of their Balms which contain beeswax. Although all of their cleaning products may be vegan, I’m hesitant to add the “Vegan!” tag next to their name as some consumers may think they’re a 100% vegan brand.
