Is Tresemme Cruelty-Free?
Tresemme is NOT Cruelty-free. Tresemme pays and allows their products to be tested on animals when required by law.
In addition, Tresemme is owned by Unilever, a parent company that is also not cruelty-free.
Tresemme Animal Testing Policy
On Tresemme’s website, they claim, no animal testing is carried out in its own laboratories. However, there are countries, where Tresemme products are sold, local authorities test their products on animals.
Below is a screenshot of what’s currently stated on Tresemme’s company website:
The country they are referring to here is China. Specifically, mainland China.
All imported cosmetics sold in stores in mainland China are required by law to be tested on animals.
Is Tresemme Sold in China?
Tresemme products are indeed sold in China. As a result, they are required to let Chinese authorities test their products on animals first.
Because of Tresemme’s decision to sell in mainland China stores, they must consent and pay to have their products tested on animals. That’s why all cosmetic brands selling in mainland China cannot be considered cruelty-free in 2020.
Although Tresemme may not be conducting these animal tests themselves, they are knowingly allowing Chinese authorities to test their products on animals in order to sell in China.
Many truly cruelty-free brands have chosen not to sell their products in China because of the country’s animal testing laws. Unfortunately, Tresemme refuses to do the same and has decided to put profits before the welfare of animals.
Summary: Tresemme is NOT Cruelty-Free!
In Tresemme’s policy, they admit to knowingly allowing local authorities in countries they sell in to test their products on animals. Therefore I would not consider Tresemme to be a cruelty-free brand.
Currently, Tresemme is on our List of Brands to Avoid – Animal Tested.
Is Tresemme Vegan?
Since we would not consider Tresemme to be cruelty-free as their products are tested on animals when required by law, we also wouldn’t consider anything sold or manufactured by Tresemme to be vegan.

May 10, 2016Companies are so tricky with their wording! I can’t stand it. I had someone tell me L’Oréal was cruelty free once and they genuinely believed that they were due to the way their testing stance is worded. It makes me so angry! We need regulations for the term “Cruelty free”!

May 11, 2016I know!! It’s so frustrating! Even when you personally reach out to some of these companies.. they’ll have some sort of cut and paste response that they tell customers whenever someone asks about their animal testing policy!
It’s also kind of hard to tell who is actually believing their words versus who is just using it as an excuse to keep buying from them. Because I know that despite my article disputing all of Tresemme’s cruelty-free claims.. there’s gonna be a handful of people that aren’t willing to accept the truth and will continue to buy their products =(
Ahh.. I dream for a cruelty-free world!

May 9, 2016I’m so tired of brands using misleading text to imply that animal testing isn’t done, that the brand isn’t doing it itself, and that they’re not responsible for it. Animal testing isn’t required by law in the USA, but they make it sound like it is required ‘in a very small amount’ when in fact they’re choosing to sell in countries that require animal testing. Good on you for pulling out the facts!

May 11, 2016YES! I totally agree! =)
Whether these companies are testing 99% or 1% of their products/ingredients on animals.. it’s STILL called animal testing!! It drives me crazy when companies try to downplay it and claim only a small portion is tested on animals.
