Sleek MakeUP is an affordable drugstore makeup brand owned by Walgreens.

I’ve been curious to know whether Sleek MakeUP is cruelty-free and if any of Sleek MakeUP products are tested on animals?

Sleek MakeUP’s Animal Testing Statement

In my research, there was virtually no information found on Sleek MakeUP’s website about their animal testing policy, except for this underwhelming statement:

I sent them an email asking if they test their products or ingredients on animals, if they commission animal test to any third parties, if any of their raw ingredient suppliers test on animals, or if they sell in foreign markets that may require animal testing (ie. Mainland China)?

Below is the response I received from someone on their customer service team:

“Thank you for your enquiry regarding Sleek Makeup products and animal testing.

Sleek Makeup and our parent company Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) make it our responsibility to ensure that none of our products are tested on animals during any stage of the product development process. This also applies to the raw materials used.

Due to this, we are therefore able to declare that all of our products comply with the Directive 2010/63/EU and are not in any way tested on animals.

Sleek Makeup has a legal obligation to ensure that its products are safe; we therefore endeavour to carry out a safety assessment on every single product prior to placing them on the market.

The safety of a cosmetic product can be assessed on the basis of the safety profile of the ingredients used within a formulation.

All of the ingredients used within our products possess well established safety records, due to this they do not require animal testing on a routine basis.

We do not sell our products directly in China (this would require animal testing) and we do not plan to until China changes its laws on animal testing.”

Overall, I’m pleasantly satisfied with the response I received from Sleek MakeUP.

They addressed all my questions and I’m happy to hear that none of their products are tested on animals during any stage of product development and this goes for their raw materials as well, and they also refuse to sell in China until China changes its laws on animal testing.

My Concerns with Sleek MakeUP

It should also be noted that Sleek MakeUP is NOT certified cruelty-free by any organization like the Leaping Bunny or PETA. This means that no one else is verifying or looking into Sleek MakeUP’s animal testing claims other than themselves.

Also, another thing that caught me off guard is Sleek MakeUP’s parent company, Walgreens, is on a couple of “Companies that DO test on animals” list, like PETA’s and Logical Harmony’s.

Some cruelty-free shoppers choose to avoid buying from cruelty-free brands that are owned by a parent company that test on animals because they feel as if the money from their purchases will indirectly support and fund more animal testing done by the parent company.

Sleek MakeUP is Cruelty-free!

Based on their email response, I would consider Sleek MakeUP to be cruelty-free but owned by a parent company that tests on animals.

I hope Sleek MakeUP will look into becoming certified cruelty-free by a third party organization like Leaping Bunny sooner rather than later!

Sleek Makeup is considered cruelty-free and doesn’t test on animals, however, since Sleek Makeup does not currently offer any vegan cosmetics, Sleek Makeup is not included on our List of Cruelty-Free & Vegan Brands.

Hey girl, awesome article. I just have one more question: is sigma vegan or at least some of their products?
