Shopping at Sephora but wondering which brands are cruelty-free and vegan? In this List of Cruelty-Free Brands at Sephora, you’ll be able to find out which brands are cruelty-free and don’t test on animals, as well as, which brands are 100% vegan where none of their products contain any animal-derived ingredients or by-products.
About this list: I went through Sephora US & Canada’s entire brand directory list of over 300+ brands and vetted each company according to our Cruelty-Free Checklist to determine if they test on animals at any stage of product development and manufacturing, anywhere in the world.
In order to be classified as Cruelty-Free, brands must meet all of the criteria in our Cruelty-Free Checklist including not selling their products in mainland China. For more information on how we approve brands and about this list, check our ✨ recently added ✨ FAQ section at the bottom of this post.
How to use this list: Use the following legend to identify whether a brand is either cruelty-free; not cruelty-free & tests on animals; owned by a non-cruelty-free parent company; 100% vegan brand; or it’s currently unclear whether they’re cruelty-free or not.
This brand is not cruelty-free; tests on animals
This brand is cruelty-free!; does not test on animals (may or may not be vegan)
This brand is cruelty-free but is owned by a parent company that does test on animals
I received a response from this brand but am not 100% satisfied with the information provided to claim if they’re cruelty-free or not
Vegan – This brand only offers vegan products; no animal-derived ingredients or by-products

FAQ
Have some questions about any of the listed brands? Glad you asked!
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about this Sephora cruelty-free brands list.
This includes confirming all approved brands:
- do not test their products or ingredients on animals
- do not commission or allow a third party to test on their behalf
- have verified with their raw material suppliers they do not test on animals
- do not sell their products in-stores in mainland China where post- or pre-market animal testing may be required by law
In addition, a brand’s animal testing policy is not as straightforward as stating “we don’t test on animals.”
We verify all brands to make sure none of their products, ingredients, or formulations are tested on animals either by the company themselves, a third party, or their suppliers, anywhere in the world.
Some of the brands that I’ve seen Sephora label as “cruelty-free” or “vegan” but aren’t as they do sell in China include: Biotherm, Benefit Cosmetics, Bobbi Brown, Caudalie, Clarins, Clinique, L’Occitane, and many more.
At this time, I wouldn’t trust Sephora’s labeling of which brands/products are “cruelty-free” or “vegan”.
We recently decided to only list cruelty-free brands that are either 100% or offer some vegan products on our Cruelty-Free Brand Directory.
If any of these cruelty-free brands decide to offer vegan options, then we will gladly add them back to our Cruelty-Free Brand Directory!
Cosmetics can be made in China and be cruelty-free, just as long as they are not sold in retail stores within China, then they are not required to test on animals.
All of the brands listed in our Cruelty-Free Guides do not sell their products in retail stores in China**
Some of the brands listed may be selling their products through cross-border e-commerce channels which do not require animal testing in China.
If that’s the case, they are selling direct-to-consumer where a Chinese customer can purchase products online, and then it gets shipped directly to them which does not require animal testing.
**Exceptions for cruelty-free brands part of Leaping Bunny’s China Pilot Project.
We also understand that some consumers don’t mind buying from these brands and would still consider them to be cruelty-free.
There is no right or wrong way to be cruelty-free, so we list these brands in our Cruelty-Free Guides while making sure to note which ones are owned by a non-CF parent corporation so that you can decide for yourself whether you want to buy or boycott these brands.
