Ethical Analysis

Is Pipette cruelty-free, vegan, or sustainable? We’ve got the answers here! Read below for more details on Pipette’s policies.
Pipette is cruelty-free. None of Pipette’s ingredients, formulations, or finished products are tested on animals anywhere in the world.
All of Pipette’s products are 100% vegan and don’t contain any animal-derived ingredients or by-products.
Pipette is committed to using “completely clean” ingredients derived from renewable sources, like their proprietary hero ingredient, squalane. Pipette’s scientists created a sugarcane-derived squalane sourced from renewable Brazilian sugarcane fields. Pipette explains, “little to no irrigation is needed to grow the sugarcane due to the naturally abundant rainfall in Brazil. And because sugarcane grows like a weed and is a rapidly renewable crop, there’s always plenty of it, ensuring that the squalane we produce from it is readily available and affordable for all. Our crops are also grown on established farmland far from the Amazon rainforest, because we have a zero-tolerance policy for deforestation.”

Additionally, Pipette practices Carbon Neutral Shipping, where they offset any carbon dioxide emitted from shipping their products to customers by funding reforestation projects and planting trees.

Pipette also states their inner and outer packaging are recyclable, and they use renewable plastic sources whenever possible.
Pipette claims their mica is ethically sourced without child labor. See their ethical mica mining policy here.
Pipette claims they use post-consumer recycled plastic in their bottles and tubes as much as possible. However, it’s not clear from the product descriptions on their website what amount of PCR plastic they use. Pipette also claims they are committed to increasing the amount of PCR used, and they’re investigating innovative sustainable packaging materials to reduce their environmental impact.

Pipette also claims many of its products are made without outer packaging to reduce waste. Any outer carton you do see is made from sugarcane-derived paperboard.

Pipette is Cruelty-Free

Pipette has confirmed they do not test their products or ingredients on animals or ask others to test on their behalf. Their suppliers also do not test on animals, nor do they allow their products to be tested on animals when required by law. And finally, their products are not sold in stores in mainland China or any other country that may require animal testing.

By our standards, we would consider Pipette to be Cruelty-Free.

Below is a screenshot of what’s currently stated on Pipette’s website about its animal testing policy:

What About China’s Animal Testing Laws?

Pipette has confirmed they only sell their products online in China and not in retail stores in mainland China; therefore, they are not required to test on animals.

“US brands can responsibly sell into China through cross-border channels and e-commerce to maintain cruelty free standards. Companies ship into a free trade zone where products are held and fulfilled to be sent directly to customers. Together with SuperOrdinary, Pipette will enter the China market initially via Tmall Global and other omnichannel cross border ecommerce platforms to establish brand awareness and market expansion. Soon, when animal testing bans in China have been 100% implemented, traditional presence in B&M outlets in mainland China will be a thrilling opportunity for Pipette.”

As of May 1, 2021, some imported ordinary cosmetics can be exempt from animal testing under certain conditions. However, for the most part, animal testing is still legally required for most imported cosmetics in 2022.

Cruelty-Free Policies

Note that there is no legal definition for the label ‘Cruelty-Free.’ It can mean different things to different people. But Cruelty-Free is generally used to imply no animal testing. More specifically, the ingredients, formulation, or finished product are not tested on animals at any stage of product development.

At ethical elephant, we always assess a company’s cruelty-free policy using our Cruelty-Free Checklist. This ensures no animal testing was performed by the brand itself, its suppliers, and by any third parties.

Also, note that Cruelty-Free and Vegan don’t always mean the same thing.

Pipette is 100% Vegan

Pipette has confirmed all of its products are vegan and don’t contain any animal-derived ingredients or by-products.

The following is a screenshot of what’s currently stated on Pipette’s website about its vegan claims:

Is Pipette Vegan?

Vegan Policies

Similar to ‘Cruelty-Free,’ there is no standard or legal definition for the label ‘Vegan.’ But it usually means no animal-derived ingredients or animal by-products.

Some common animal products used in cosmetics include carmine, lanolin, snail mucus, beeswax, honey, pearl or silk-derived ingredients, animal-based glycerin, keratin, and squalene.

There are plant-based and synthetic alternatives to animal-derived ingredients. But it’s sometimes difficult to know with certainty whether a product is vegan just by reading the ingredient list.

So it’s best to ask the company and manufacturers to ensure the ingredients they’ve chosen to use were from non-animal sources.

Where are Pipette’s products made?

Pipette states on its website,

“All Pipette products are proudly made in the USA.”

Ethical Mica Mining Policy

Mica is a mineral that’s used in cosmetics to add a shimmery effect. But the mining of natural mica has been linked to child labor and human rights violations.

Unless the company discloses its mica mining policy, we have no way of knowing whether its mica is ethically sourced without child or forced labor.

So I asked Pipette if their mica is ethically sourced without the use of child labor and they responded by stating,

“We ethically source our mica from a mine located in Georgia, and we do require documentation from all our vendors and suppliers. All ingredients are prepared/grown/harvested in the US aside from the sugarcane-derived squalane oil which naturally comes from Brazil.”

I hope this article helped you to understand Pipette’s cruelty-free and vegan status and by choosing cruelty-free together, we can help end animal testing for cosmetics once and for all!
