So-called “Cruelty-free” products have become increasingly popular in the last couple of years, but let’s take a step back and ask, what exactly does it mean when cosmetics, personal care, and household cleaning products are labeled as “cruelty-free”?
.
Products that are labeled as “Cruelty-Free” generally means they weren’t tested on animals, however, there is no standard or legal definition as to what is and isn’t allowed to be labeled as “cruelty-free”. So companies can call themselves and their products “cruelty-free” and it can mean whatever THEY want.
.
Misleading? — Yes.
Illegal? — No.
.
The FDA, responsible for regulating cosmetics labeling in the US, states on its website, “Consumers sometimes ask about use of claims such as “Cruelty-Free” or “Not Tested on Animals” on cosmetic labeling. Some cosmetic companies promote their products with claims of this kind in their labeling or advertising. The unrestricted use of these phrases by cosmetic companies is possible because there are no legal definitions for these terms.”
.
Unrestricted Use. No Legal Definition. — “Cruelty-Free” is now being used as a buzzword by marketers wanting to cash in on the trend.
.
But not ALL cruelty-free companies are liars and imposters. Some brands are genuinely committed to not testing their finished products and ingredients on animals, anywhere in the world.
.
But HOW do we know which cosmetic brands are telling the truth and are truly cruelty-free in 2020?
.
❶ Ask brands if their products or ingredients are tested on animals either by the company, their ingredient suppliers or commissioned to a third party and if they allow animal testing when required by law.
❷ Look for @leapingbunnyprogram brands --the most trusted cruelty-free certification program available!
❸ Check @ethicalelephant’s Cruelty-Free Brand Directory List where we have verified each and every brand's cruelty-free status before we list them (link in bio!)
.
Together, we can end animal testing for cosmetics once and for all!
.
Thank you for choosing cruelty-free! 🐘 💕

“It’s not about being perfect! And we don’t know any vegans who walk around saying that they are, or that they cause zero harm. Veganism doesn’t mean causing ZERO harm (that would be delusional)... but it definitely means causing a lot less of it!! And causing LESS harm than before (before being vegan) is definitely worth celebrating and continuing to advocate for.

Don’t let the vegan haters get you down. Usually the people pointing their fingers and trying to find a flaw in veganism are the ones who simply don’t understand it or don’t know what it takes to stand for something.” (Words by @vegan_boss, 📸 via @unmeatfuture)

Is Live Clean Tested on Animals?

Live Clean is a Canadian eco-friendly hair and skincare brand, they use only natural, plant-sourced or non-petrochemical based ingredients that are renewable and sustainable. Live Clean also claims to only use 100% vegetarian ingredients.

I have seen Live Clean at my local Wal-mart and London Drugs and on their bottles, it says no animal testing but I couldn’t find details about their animal testing policy anywhere on the interweb! Their website briefly mentions that “no animals are directly or indirectly tested or harmed”.

Live Clean's Animal Testing Policy Live Clean is also not certified by either Leaping Bunny or PETA and not on any known cruelty-free lists that I follow now certified cruelty-free by the Leaping Bunny program! (UPDATED: OCT 16, 2017) So naturally I decided to contact them directly. I have been waiting to hear a response from them for months and I’m happy to finally share the good news with you all and that is, Live Clean is indeed a cruelty-free brand with  some vegan options!

Below you will find Live Clean’s response about their animal testing policy:

Dear Vicky,

Thank you for taking the time to contact us regarding our Live Clean® Product. We apologize for the delay in our reply and appreciate your patience.

Live Clean® products are 100% cruelty free, they are never tested on animals. We also work with our suppliers to ensure that none of the individual ingredients are tested on animals. Our products use 100% vegetarian ingredients.  Check the specific product label for the following cruelty free animal byproducts like honey, hydrolyzed milk and beeswax to determine if it is suitable for your lifestyle:

Honey: Exotic Silk Keratin Oil Smoothing Shampoo, Exotic Silk Keratin Oil Smoothing Conditioner, Exotic Silk Keratin Oil Protective Thermal Spray, Exotic Silk Keratin Oil Leave In Treatment

Hydrolyzed Milk Protein: Coconut Milk Shampoo, Coconut Milk Conditioner, Coconut Milk Moisturizing Body Wash, Coconut Oil Moisturizing Liquid Hand Soap, Coconut Milk Moisturizing Body Lotion

Cera Alba (Beeswax): Clean Air Weightless Conditioner, Exotic Shine Bali Oil Nutri-Shine Conditioner, Exotic Nectar Argan Oil Restorative Conditioner, Exotic Vitality Monoï Oil Conditioner, Exotic Silk Keratin Oil Smoothing Conditioner, Sensitive Hypoallergenic Conditioner, Coconut Milk Conditioner, Exotic Nectar Argan Oil Leave-In Conditioner Spray, Exotic Vitality Monoï Leave-In Conditioner Spray, Age Resist Conditioner, Gentle Moisture Non-Petroleum Jelly, Soothing Oatmeal Relief Non-Petroleum Jelly, Protecting Lip Balm, Moisturizing Lip Balm, Soothing Lip Balm, Gentle Moisture Diaper Ointment, Soothing Oatmeal Relief Diaper Ointment

From the initial email response, they didn’t address third party testing or whether they sell in China so a follow-up was neccessary. Here is the second email response:

Dear Vicky,

Thank you for your reply regarding our Live Clean® Product. We do not hire 3rd parties to test our products on animals and our products are not currently distributed internationally in China.

I am happy to be able to support another Canadian cruelty-free and eco-friendly brand like Live Clean! I’ve tried a few of their body wash before and they’re such a great drugstore option!

Have you tried any of Live Clean’s products before? Share your experience in the comments! =)

What do you think?

I bought a travel pack with Live Clean’s daily moisturizer, nighttime moisturizer, cleanser, and exfoliating cleanser. I love them all! I just bought a full size daily moisturizer at Shoppers for $17.99. Felt like good value to me! I also love their conditioner (I haven’t tried their shampoo). This morning I needed to know if they test on animals. I am so happy to find out that they don’t! They should really include that info on their packaging. Thanks for your post!

Thank you for doing this and touching base with the company its self. I have seen “No animal testing” on Live Clean website, but because their products have no actual symbols, this is great for backing up their word about NOT testing on animals.
I appreciate you sharing this, and taking the time to find out more information.
    Thanks a bunch!

You’re very welcome and I’m so happy to hear that it was helpful to you! =)

EDIT: Just wanted to add, after I responded to your comment.. I checked to see if Live Clean was certified cruelty-free since publishing this post, and I’m happy to update this post to say that Live Clean is now CERTIFIED cruelty-free by The Leaping Bunny program! This ensures their cruelty-free claims have been verified by a third party organization! Yippeee!

Awesome! Can you please look into a shampoo brand called “Maui”? They say they’re cruelty free but not certified or on cruelty free blogs etc
