Yves Saint Laurent Beauty is a high-end, designer makeup brand but is YSL cruelty-free in 2020?
Is YSL Beauty Cruelty-Free?
YSL Beauty is NOT Cruelty-free. YSL Beauty pays and allows their products to be tested on animals when required by law. YSL Beauty also sells its products in stores in mainland China where animal testing is mandatory for all imported cosmetics.
Yves Saint Laurent Beauty is also owned by L’Oreal, a parent company that is also not cruelty-free.
YSL Beauty Animal Testing Policy
YSL adopts the same animal testing policy as their parent company, L’Oreal stating on YSL’s website:
“Our consumers’ health and safety have always been an absolute priority for L’Oréal. As is the support of animal welfare.
L’Oréal has developed a very rigorous safety evaluation procedure of its products, backed by research. Well before the question of animal testing was raised by civil society or within a regulatory framework, L’Oréal has been committed to new methods of assessing safety that don’t involve animals. A true pioneer, L’Oréal has been reconstructing human skin models in laboratories to elaborate in vitro safety tests since 1979, as an alternative to animals. In 1989, L’Oréal completely ceased testing its products on animals, thus 14 years before the regulation required so. Today, L’Oréal no longer tests its ingredients on animals and no longer tolerates any exception to this rule.
Certain health authorities may nevertheless decide to conduct animal tests themselves for certain cosmetic products, as it is still the case in China. L’Oréal has been the most active company working alongside the Chinese authorities and scientists for over 10 years to have alternative testing methods recognized, and permit the cosmetic regulation to evolve towards a total and definite elimination of animal testing. Thanks to this, since 2014, certain products manufactured and sold in China like shampoo, body wash or make-up are no longer tested on animals.”
Since YSL Beauty follows the same animal testing policy as L’Oreal and we know that L’Oreal is not a cruelty-free corporation because they allow their products to be tested on animals by Chinese officials in order to sell in China, then it’s also implied the YSL is doing the same.
Is YSL Beauty Sold in China?
So, we know that L’Oreal sells their cosmetics in China and are required to test on animals but is YSL Beauty sold in stores in mainland China?
Yes. I found evidence that YSL Beauty is indeed sold in China.
Below is a screenshot I took of YSL Beauty’s Chinese website and if you click on their store locator, you can find several beauty counters and retail stores selling YSL Beauty cosmetics.
Although YSL Beauty and L’Oreal may not be conducting these animal tests themselves, they are allowing and paying Chinese officials to do it for them.
Many truly cruelty-free cosmetic brands have chosen not to sell in retail stores in China for this very reason or until China no longer requires imported cosmetics to be tested on animals.
Unfortunately, Yves Saint Laurent Beauty refuses to do the same.
Summary: YSL Beauty is NOT Cruelty-Free!
By choosing to sell in mainland China, YSL Beauty must have their products be tested on animals. Therefore I would not consider Yves Saint Laurent Beauty to be a cruelty-free brand.
The same goes for YSL Perfume, they are NOT cruelty-free.
YSL Beauty is on our List of Brands to Avoid – Animal Tested.
Is YSL Beauty Vegan?
Since we would not consider YSL Beauty to be cruelty-free as their products are tested on animals when required by law, we also wouldn’t consider anything sold or manufactured by YSL Beauty to be vegan.
