Purlisse’s Cruelty-Free Status is Unclear
Purlisse claims it does not conduct any testing of its ingredients or products on animals, however, we were unable to receive clarification if they vet all of their ingredient suppliers to ensure they don’t test on animals too.
As a result, we are unable to classify Purlisse as being truly cruelty-free or animal-tested. Therefore, Purlisse is listed as Grey Area – Brands with Unclear Policies.
Purlisse’s Animal Testing Policy
On Purlisse’s website, they claim that they do not conduct any testing of ingredients or products on animals, however, this is not enough information for us to classify Purlisse or any other brand as being cruelty-free to our standards.
Below is a screenshot of what’s currently stated on Purlisse’s website:
That’s because animal testing for cosmetics can happen at various stages of product development, including at the ingredient level, and is often done by others and not the cosmetic company itself. This is why we always assess a company’s cruelty-free policy using our Cruelty-Free Checklist. This ensures no animal testing was performed by the brand itself, its suppliers, or any third parties.
So I reached out to Purlisse to ask for more information about their animal testing policy. More specifically, I wanted to know if they commission or allow others to test on animals including vetting each and every single one of their ingredient suppliers to ensure they don’t test on animals.
Purlisse responded by answering “no” to all of my cruelty-free questions including the one about their ingredient suppliers (see below):
“Do you verify with all of your ingredient suppliers that they don’t test on animals? And do you require documentation, certificates, or perform audits to ensure compliance? – No“
Unfortunately, this means Purlisse has not met all of the criteria in our Cruelty-Free Checklist, which includes, brand’s ingredients suppliers & manufacturers also do not test on animals and they verify this with documents or certificates.
Is Purlisse Cruelty-Free?
Because Purlisse does not verify that all of their ingredient suppliers don’t test on animals, we are unable to determine whether Purlisse is truly cruelty-free or animal-tested.
Therefore, Purlisse is on our Grey Area – Brands with Unclear Policies.
Is Purlisse Certified Cruelty-Free?
Purlisse is not certified cruelty-free by any third-party cruelty-free certifications like Leaping Bunny or PETA.
Because Purlisse is not certified cruelty-free by a third party, no one is looking into or substantiating Purlisse’s cruelty-free commitments and claims.
Is Purlisse Vegan?
Purlisse claims to be 100% vegan where none of their products contain any animal-derived ingredients or by-products. But until we are able to determine Purlisse as being truly cruelty-free (including their suppliers), we are unable to consider anything sold or produced by Purlisse to be vegan at this time.
In order for products to be considered vegan by ethical elephant’s standards, the products and their ingredients must not be tested on animals anywhere in the world. Also, they must not contain any animal-derived ingredients or by-products.
