A lot of cruelty-free consumers are wondering if Pat McGrath Labs test on animals or if this popular luxury cosmetic brand is cruelty-free in 2021, so I figured I should do a post sharing what we know about this brand so far.
Back in 2017, Pat McGrath’s animal testing policy used to state that they do not test on animals, except when required by law. This is why Pat McGrath was previously listed in our “Brands to Avoid List.” However, around 2018, Pat McGrath removed the disclaimer “except when required by law” from their policy and never addressed the reasons for the change.
This has left many cruelty-free consumers wondering, what changed in their policy? And does that mean Pat McGrath is cruelty-free now?
Unfortunately, we still don’t know the reasons for the changes to Pat McGrath’s animal testing policy, and although they were able to provide us with some additional information about their policy in an email response, it still wasn’t enough for us to determine whether Pat McGrath is cruelty-free or not in 2021.
Is Pat McGrath Cruelty-Free?
We currently do not have enough information to declare Pat McGrath Labs as cruelty-free or not and therefore Pat McGrath is on our ‘Unclear Policies’ list.
Currently, on Pat McGrath Labs’ website, it states they do not test their products or ingredients on animals, however, this is not enough information to know if any animal testing occurred during product development and manufacturing.
Below is a comparison of two screenshots from Pat McGrath’s website in 2017 vs. 2020. As you can see you, they removed “except when required by law” from their policy.
I reached out to the company for clarifications on their current animal testing policy and was informed that Pat McGrath does not test any of their products or ingredients on animals and that they do not ask or hire others to test on their behalf, and that they do not currently sell any of their products in a physical retail store in mainland China or any other country that may require animal testing by law.
But when I asked if their raw material suppliers test on animals, they stated that they “cannot confirm at this time.”
Because Pat McGrath was unable to provide further clarifications on whether their raw material suppliers test on animals, we do not have enough information to consider the brand as being cruelty-free or not.
Pat McGrath is included in our List of Brands with Unclear Policies.
