Cruelty-Free & Vegan Mascara Guide

This post may contain affiliate links.

The most frequently asked question I hear from cruelty-free consumers is What’s the best vegan mascara?! Everyone has been raving about Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara but the higher price point has got people asking for MORE vegan mascara options!

Vegan Mascara

Wait, what’s vegan mascara you ask? Mascara that is vegan means that the ingredients and final product were not tested on animals and it must not contain any animal-derived ingredients. There’s plenty of options for cruelty-free mascaras on the market but most of them contain beeswax and stearic acid that could possibly be derived from animal sources.

What about Josie Marans, Black oil mascara? It’s my favorite, but not on the list.

    Greetings Vicky,
Good thing i came across your vegan guide page searching for vegan, natural and cruelty free mascara and other vegan beauty stuffs. Currently I am using Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara and wanna try other brands. I have been into vegan things for a few months now and yeah I’m loving it. I liked BTS but it’s kinda wet and messy and clumps. I learned about Eye Ko and heard good reviews on it but i don’t it is vegan. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and the informative mascara list you compiled. Looking forward to a more helpful beauty finds and wellness guide.

    Hi Vicky,
Thank you for compiling this list! I know it has been a few months, but I just checked on the Too Faced website, and their mascara (Too Faced – Better Than Sex ($23)) has beeswax (not vegan). I thought you’d like to know.

      Hey Debbie!
I’m looking at Too Faced website and the ingredients in the Better Than Sex mascara says “Synthetic Beeswax” –and at the bottom of the ingredient list, it reads “*Vegan-friendly”

I’m almost certain that the synthetic beeswax Too Faced uses in their Better Than Sex mascara is made of all vegan-friendly ingredients so no animal ingredients are used to make this mascara.

And I checked the Better Than Sex WATERPROOF mascara ingredient list, and I see “Beeswax/Cera Alba/ Cire d’Abeille” listed. Therefore the waterproof mascara isn’t vegan.

Are you seeing something different on your side? I checked both their Canadian and US website and it’s the same. If you’re seeing that it says “Beeswax” on their regular mascara, could you please share a screenshot of it to info@ethicalelephant.com?? I’d love to look into it more and find out why there might be a discrepancy with their ingredient list! =)

Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara now comes in waterproof as well! All the wonders up the regular mascara but smudge proof (:

I was so excited to hear that they were releasing a waterproof version of their Better Than Sex mascara but sadly the waterproof formula contains beeswax and isn’t considered vegan by definition =(

But their regular BTS mascara is beeswax-free, so hopefully they’re working on a vegan version of the waterproof one!! *fingers crossed* hehe

Wow, didn’t realised GOSH was cruelty free. That is great. Might give one of them a go.

I don’t care too much about my mascara as long as it doesn’t give me spider lashes, so Wet N’ Wild Megalength works great for me! Super cheap, effective but natural-looking, and it’s on the vegan list on their website (not all of their mascaras are vegan, though).

I know what you mean Diana! Although the Spider Lash look was starting to become a trend but I don’t think that stayed for long hehe

I heard great things about Wet N Wild mascaras! but wasn’t sure if they were vegan as I know the list on their website’s FAQ is sort of outdated! I’ll be sure to add them to the list now though! Thanks for your insight, Diana!! =)

vegan mascara is so tricky and i am constantly on the search for an amazing one. i’ve tried better than sex, dream big, and the lily lolo. i liked better than sex, but the formula was very wet and messy, and dream big is ok but the wand always pokes me in the eye and i don’t think there’s much payoff. i think my favorite has definitely been the lily lolo. maybe i should go back to that one. i also really like the arbonne it’s a long story mascara. it’s not messy and the wand is really good, too.

    do you have a favorite?

I know mascara can be a bit tricky! Hm.. everyone seems to swear by the BTS and the new Pacifica mascara so I’m surprised to hear that there’s not much payoff to it…

I’ve been loving 100% Pure mascara.. but it is fairly wet and since I have super short lashes.. it’s not as painful for me to use. All of the e.l.f mascaras are pretty good but man, they dry up QUICK (expected since they’re like only $3!)

I’ve tried Glam Natural and Lavera and they’re both on the natural-looking side.. wouldn’t recommend if you want more dramatic lashes. And I just got Pacifica Acquarian Gaze and so far I’m loving it! It’s not nearly as wet as the 100% Pure one.

I know a few people love Beauty Without Cruelty mascaras.. have you tried any of them before?

This list is soooo helpful! I wish I’d found something like this when I was first transitioning to green & vegan beauty – I spent way too much time on each brand’s site doing ingredient checks!
